If you've ever had a spec sheet cross your desk with "Henkel" printed on it—and wondered what you're actually paying for—you're in good company. Those chains vary in length and structure; they don't repeat in a regular monomer sequence.
So lipids are not polymers because they aren't built from repeating covalent monomer units. They can aggregate into membranes through hydrophobic interactions, but that's physical assembly, not polymerization.
Why does this matter to someone buying industrial materials? Because "polymer-based" tells you a material is film-forming, durable, and structurally strong—the basis of most adhesives and coatings. Lipid-based materials are softer and more prone to oxidation. Knowing that one concept has stopped me from spec'ing the wrong material at least twice. You don't need a chemistry degree; you just need enough understanding to ask the right question.
If you're comparing two "polymer sealants" from different suppliers, you're comparing real engineering chemistries. If someone offers you a "natural lipid-based protectant," you now know why that's a different category entirely.

This question sits underneath every product decision, whatever the brand. Generalist distributors are convenient: one catalog, one invoice. But when the product is critical to performance, convenience doesn't beat depth.
Specialist technical teams have the application knowledge to stop you from making expensive mistakes.
