If Your Adhesive Supplier Says "We Do Everything," That's a Red Flag
If a supplier says they can handle every adhesive, sealant, and coating request, I don't trust them. That's a deliberately blunt statement, but I've earned the right to make it after nearly a decade of handling industrial and specialty bonding orders. Basically, I've also made enough mistakes to know that "generalist" is often a polite word for "master of none."
In 2017, I made the classic one-adhesive-fits-all mistake. I ordered a general-purpose acrylic adhesive for a part that needed to survive under continuous heat. It looked fine on the datasheet. On the production line, it crapped out. That mistake cost us $3,200 in wasted material, plus a week of schedule slip that made everyone miserable. (Should mention: the datasheet did list the temperature range. I just didn't match it to the actual operating environment.) Since then, my team and I have built a pre-check list that catches problems before they burn money. It has caught 47 potential errors in the last 18 months alone.
Here's what I've learned: the biggest risk isn't a supplier who makes a mistake. It's a supplier who thinks they're the answer to every material challenge. That oversimplification causes more damage than any one bad batch of glue.
The Oversimplification Trap
It's tempting to think that there's a universal adhesive for acrylic—one that sticks to all polymers, all temperatures, all substrates. But the chemistry doesn't work that way. Acrylics have low surface energy, they craze under stress, and UV resistance matters if the bond is exposed to sunlight. So when a customer asks for an "adhesive for acrylic" without specifying the grade, I know they're hoping for a simple answer. I can't give one because acrylic is a whole family of plastics, not a single material.
The same simplification happens at the company level. Customers see a brand like Henkel and assume that because it makes everything from laundry detergent to industrial sealants, it must have one giant technical department that knows every product intimately. That's a myth. In reality, Henkel has separate business units with separate scientists and separate application engineers. I know that because when someone asked me about that quarter in late 2019, I had no clue. I'm in the adhesives world, not the consumer market. Actually, it's more than fine—it's necessary.

Another recurring question: "What temperature is needed for powder coating?" That question is a perfect example of why I'm careful to stay in my lane. Powder coating is not an adhesive technology. It's a dry finishing process. The typical cure range is a ballpark of 350-400°F (180-200°C), but the exact temperature depends on the powder resin, the substrate thickness, and the oven dwell time. If a customer asks me that, I'll give them the general range and then point them to a coating engineer or the coating supplier's technical data sheet. That's the honest answer, even though it might mean they call someone else.
If I'd fallen into the "we-do-everything" trap, I might have tried to answer based on half-remembered specs. That's exactly how you get the kind of failure I saw in September 2022. I approved a sealant for a high-temperature assembly after a quick phone call. I said "high temperature." The supplier heard "up to 150°C." Our process reached 200°C. The seals failed and we shut down for three days. That was a $450 redo plus the embarrassment of explaining to management why a verbal spec wasn't written down. Looking back, I should have sent a written specification with a clear temperature ceiling. But given what I knew at the time, the phone call seemed enough. It wasn't.
The Cost of "One-Stop-Shop" Thinking
I know what some of you are thinking: "But managing a dozen specialists is a pain. Isn't one vendor who handles everything worth it?"
Honestly, no, not in serious engineering. If you're choosing promotional pens, sure—one supplier for everything is a no-brainer. But when the part has to survive a crash test or a hospital sterilization cycle, you don't want a generalist who's "kind of okay" at bonding, coating, foaming, and sealing. You want someone who has seen your exact failure mode before and knows what to do. The convenience of a one-stop shop disappears the moment a line stops because a supposedly universal product doesn't work.
That's why my pre-check list now includes a step that sounds silly until you've been burned: "Confirm that the person you're talking to knows the difference between an adhesive and a coating." It sounds basic, but it has actually caught more than one potential mismatch. When we do evaluations, we put as much weight on a supplier's honest "no" as we do on their technical yeses. A vendor that says "this isn't our strength—here's who does it better" earns my trust for everything else.
My Bottom Line
I don't want a partner who promises the impossible. I want someone who tells me what they're actually good at and helps me find the right specialist for the rest. So here's my advice, straight from someone who has paid the tuition: ask your adhesive supplier the tough questions. Ask if they have an adhesive for acrylic that meets your specific stress and temperature needs. Ask whether they can support a powder coating job—or at least admit when they can't. And if they give you a confident answer about literally everything? Take that as a red flag.
The best adhesive suppliers know their limits. The ones who don't are the ones who will cost you time, money, and credibility.
