If you’re responsible for specifying or accepting industrial adhesives, sealants, or coatings, this checklist is for you. I’m a quality manager, and I review roughly 200 unique product batches a year. In 2024, I rejected just under 8% of first deliveries because of spec deviations—some minor, some expensive. This is the process I use every time, whether we’re ordering a full drum of structural adhesive or a small box of adhesive wall hooks for packaging.
When This Checklist Applies
Use this before ordering a new product, switching suppliers, or troubleshooting a recurring bond failure. It works for large-scale manufacturing orders and for niche items like adhesive wall hooks used in retail displays. If you’re a QA/QC professional, a production manager, or a buyer with technical oversight, you can adapt these steps directly to your procedure. I’ve built this around the seven things that most often cause part failures, rejected lots, and rework.
The 7-Point Verification Checklist
1. Define the Real Service Environment
Don’t just say “adhesive.” Ask what materials are being joined, what temperature range the part experiences, whether it contacts moisture or chemicals, and how long the bond must last. This is where the classic question “does acetone melt PVC?” comes in. Acetone is a solvent that attacks PVC, so if you use a solvent-based adhesive containing acetone to bond PVC, you may end up with crazed surfaces or a joint that separates under load.
I once told a supplier we needed a “standard industrial adhesive” for PVC frames. They heard “solvent-based.” Result: a deformed batch that cost us two weeks. Now I write the exact substrate names, chemical exposure, and maximum service temperature on every request. (Surprise, surprise—the fix was just being specific.)
2. Request TDS and SDS Before You Order
A technical data sheet (TDS) tells you what a product can do; a safety data sheet (SDS) tells you what it can’t safely do. For most Henkel chemical products—including Loctite anaerobic adhesives and industrial sealants—you can download the SDS from Henkel’s portal before you buy. Don’t skip this step. I’ve seen compatibility issues that would have been obvious from the SDS.
Check the cure profile, substrate compatibility, and any limits on temperature or solvent resistance. If you’re in a regulated industry, verify VOC content or other compliance requirements. In my experience, ten minutes of document review saves an hour of failure analysis later.
3. Verify Batch Traceability (The Step Most People Skip)
This one is easy to forget, especially for small orders. We didn’t have a formal lot-traceability process, and it cost us when a batch of cured sealant looked right on the surface but failed a peel test. Now every purchase order requires a lot number, a retained sample, and a certificate of analysis when available.
On a 50,000-unit annual order, that level of traceability saved us from a $22,000 redo—the supplier had changed a minor ingredient without telling us. The retained sample proved the difference. Even for adhesive wall hooks, I ask for the lot number. If a batch performs badly, you need to know exactly which units to pull.
4. Test Under Realistic Conditions, Not Ideal Ones
It’s tempting to test on clean, brand-new panels. But your production floor isn’t a lab. If you’re bonding adhesive wall hooks to painted drywall in a humid warehouse, test that—not just the pristine panel from the product data sheet.
I went back and forth for two weeks between testing on the supplier’s recommended sample panels and testing on the surfaces we actually use. On paper, the ideal panel made sense. My gut said the real-world surface would be different. Good thing I listened: the failure rate was roughly 1 in 10 on realistic surfaces, compared to 1 in 50 on clean panels. Upgrading our spec to require realistic testing cut field complaints by more than half.
5. Check Packaging, Shelf Life, and Storage
Industrial adhesives are perishable. A cartridge of polyurethane sealant might have a shelf life of 12 months, and it will become thick or stringy if frozen. Check the production date, not just the “best before” date. I’ve seen pallets of sealant stored next to a kiln—good luck getting that to bond properly.
The third time we ordered the wrong quantity because we ignored storage data, I finally created a simple FIFO (first-in, first-out) verification checklist. Now every incoming shipment gets a date stamp and quarantine until it passes a quick visual check. This is one of those steps that feels like overkill—until you open a box of seized adhesive.
6. Don’t Forget Downstream Processes
If your part goes through a small powder coating system after the adhesive or sealant is applied, the sealant must tolerate the cure oven. We once specified a standard sealant for an assembly that later went through a powder coat line. It outgassed and caused pinholes in the coating. The supplier’s rep said exactly what I was thinking: “We both said standard sealant but meant different things.”
Now we write “designed for bake cycles up to 220°C” on every relevant purchase order. If powder coating is part of your process, ask your adhesive supplier for a heat-cure curve and a test panel. This step is often overlooked because the adhesive decision happens before the coating decision—but in today’s production lines, those steps are connected.
7. Review Supplier Support and Claims
Finally, look at documentation and technical support. Henkel sealants products and services include technical helplines, SDS databases, and batch certificates. That kind of support matters when you need a compatibility question answered by Thursday. It also matters when a claim sounds too good to be true.
Per the FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov), environmental claims like “recyclable” or “biodegradable” must be substantiated. For example, a product labeled “recyclable” should be recyclable for at least 60% of consumers. I’ve seen suppliers use vague marketing terms to avoid the fine print. Ask for the evidence. In my opinion, a supplier that can’t back up its claims will also struggle with batch consistency.
Common Mistakes I’ve Had to Fix
After four years of reviewing incoming materials, these are the issues that keep coming up:
Assuming “standard” means the same thing to everyone. It doesn’t. Write down exact dimensions, materials, cure times, and tolerances. A five-minute spec review prevents a five-week delay.
Skipping batch verification on small items. Even adhesive wall hooks need an adhesion check. A bad batch can ruin a retail display and create a quality complaint.
Storing sealants and adhesives in a hot warehouse. Heat accelerates curing. I’ve rejected batches that were already hardening inside the cartridge.
Letting a coating line run before compatibility testing. That’s the $22,000 mistake I mentioned. A quick heat test would have caught it.
The fundamentals haven’t changed—you still need to verify specs, batches, and the real application environment. But the execution has transformed. Digital SDS systems, online batch traceability, and faster testing cycles are all normal now. Use them. They make the job a lot easier than it was in 2020. And remember: a little friction at the receiving dock is cheaper than a recall.
