I make a living from other people's emergencies. And honestly? Most of them are self-inflicted.

In my role coordinating emergency supply deliveries for industrial clients, I've handled more than 200 rush jobs over seven years. Same-day turnarounds for automotive plants. Here's something I don't mention enough: our single biggest source of emergencies wasn't product failure. It was inventory blindness. Clients didn't know what they had, so they couldn't know what they were about to run out of.

Five minutes of verification beats five days of correction

The 12-point checklist I created after my third avoidable mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. That's the conservative number. I do not count the relationships we never had to strain along the way.

I know "prevention over cure" sounds like an HR poster. But I've lived the alternative for seven years, and I can tell you the difference isn't abstract. It's the difference between a 4:58pm Thursday panic and a normal Thursday where your client's line keeps running because someone — you — checked the stock level on Tuesday.
